This article seeks to explain the process of forest expansion in the south of Chile
since the 1980s through socioenvironmental transformations in the town of San
Juan de la Costa, province of Osorno. This article considers local press and oral
accounts as primary sources. Some results obtained indicate that the
environmental impacts of the forest industry have modified the lifestyle of the local
population and, through the consolidation of the forest model, stressed the
relationship between capital, labor and nature in the territory.
