Abstract

This article aims to offer some key elements to conduct research on the Local Histories of Poblaciones (squatter settlements) in Chile, understood as a particular form in which the social memory of the urban popular classes about the recent past is expressed. To do so, this document characterizes, firstly, the process of emergence of these popular historiographical productions and their development in the last thirty years, highlighting the profiles of those who produce them. Secondly, it summarizes the state-of-the-art of both the relationship between local history and social memory in Chile and the historiographical analysis of these popular productions. Finally, it proposes a periodization that can contribute to setting up a future research agenda on this topic.
