The organization of strikes in Magellan stations: Sociability and politicization of rural workers in Patagonia between 1890 and 1912

This article seeks to analyze the politicization process of the rural workers in Magallanes. These farmworkers used the working conditions typical of industrial farming besides the routes to Patagonia and other spaces of sociability inherited from the preindustrial period to develop a strategy that allowed the politicization of social relations in the stations and in urbanized areas. The attitude taken by the striking workers, the nature of their demands, and the working-class press’s speech evince the clear transition to creating a rural working-class in Patagonia. For these reasons, the general strike of 1912 will represent the successful recognition of that process.
